Seminar groups

The first semester and its new experiences can be overwhelming and it may be a little hard to get used to your new life as a university student. To help you find your way easily in your first year of Uni there are seminar groups in the first semester. This way you are not on your own in the lecture accompanying exercises, but you’ll see familiar faces and friends with whom you can team up to tackle homework and studies together. Every seminar group comes with a tutor who will give you all the information you need, answer any questions and support you in many matters. For this there will be meetings roughly every four weeks apart, but you can obviously ask urgent questions outside of these meetings.

Schedule

You get a schedule according to your seminar group of choice in your first semester. That way you have less organisatory work to do and it is ensured that everyone get’s a place in the (sometimes small) classes, but you can still choose the best schedule for you. The schedules are all oriented towards the planned modules for the first semester according to the official study schedule.

In the following semesters you’ll have to build your own schedule and enroll in lectures and exercises by yourself.

According to the current state of knowledge, the responsible authorities will not provide us with any schedules for enrollment this semester. We will still help you with the enrollment.

Official study schedule (Studienablaufplan)

The official study schedule determines which courses you should cover in which semester, how much time you should allocate for them and how many credit points they yield. It gives you an overview at which time you should do an internship or vacation. Keep in mind though that the order is not mandatory.

Modules/courses

Modules can contain lectures, exercises and practical training. The content of a module is recorded in the related module description, which you can find either on the website of the module or in the PDF of the study regulations. In it you’ll find the contents and goals of a course, its prerequisites and the graded performance required.

Credit points

Credit points measure the time spent per module or degree by a student. In particular, 1 so called ECTS-point is worth 30 hours of work. How many credit points a module yield is recorded in the official study schedule and in the related module description.

ZIH-Login

You will receive your own personal ZIH-Login from the ZIH (the centre for information services and high performance computing), with which you can log in to your Mail-Account, the campus wide WiFi “eduroam” (also available at many other campuses world wide!) and all other uni related platforms. Additionally, you can use it on many platforms to get student discounts, like Microsofts (Free Licenses), Spotify and many more.

jExam (Enrollment)

On the online-platform jExam you will enroll in your seminar group and courses, and later receive your exam results. On Tuesday you will choose your seminar group together with a tutor from your seminar group using jExam.

For all foreign students - DSE, CL students and exchange students who only study at the faculty for 1-2 semesters - the International Office is responsible.

All kinds of information relevant to students are distributed via mailing lists. A complete list can be found on the FSR website.

Campus

Campus Navigator

The Campus Navigator helps you orient yourself on the campus and get information about buildings. It is available as Website or as app for iOS and Android.

Andreas-Pfitzmann-Bau (APB)

The APB is the building of the Faculty Computer Science. It’s the building with the green windows, which you can see on the pictures on the home page and which you will visit every day during ESE. Many of your courses will be held here. Additionally you can find PC pools, workplaces, the FSR-bureau, the student coffee shop ascii and much more. If a seminar room is free, you can use it for your private studies.

ascii

The ascii is a student-run café in the APB, which is closely connected to the FSR. Coffee and cold drinks are not pricy here. Besides, the ascii is a popular place of staying for many computer science students. If you would like to contribute to the ascii on your own, you can simply contact an ascii member who will help you.

Canteens

On campus there are multiple canteens with daily changing menus. The canteen closest to the APB is the Alte Mensa. You pay with your Emeal-Card.

SLUB (Saxon State and University Library)

In the SLUB you can borrow free textbooks, lexicons and much else. Simply sign up online. If you can't find what you're looking for, send a request to SLUB and they will add it to their range, as long as it is a reasonable acquisition. Many students use the SLUB as a place to study, as it is quiet and offers many places to work. If you want to study in a group, you can book a room.

Dresden

The sights

The first thing that comes to mind is the Old Town, Dresden’s historic centre. Many sights such as the Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Fürstenzug and Residenzschloss can be found there.

The quarter on the other side of the Elbe is called Neustadt (New Town). The Golden Horseman, the Japanese Palace, the Pfunds Dairy and the Kunsthof Passage (Art Courtyard Passage) will definitely make your visit worthwhile.

Not far from the campus, there is the Großer Garten (Grand Garden) the green heart of the city with the Dresden Zoo. But also the Blue Wonder and the Dresden railways in Loschwitz are worth a visit or a ride.

For further sightseeing and more detailed information, please refer to the website of the city of Dresden.

Neustadt

The Neustadt north of the Elbe is considered the Bohemian Quarter of Dresden. Its original flair results from the many small shops, pubs, bars and restaurants along the narrow streets and colourful lanes. A dream come true for every student ;). Every year, the district party Bunte Republik Neustadt (BRN) and the aforementioned sights attract thousands of visitors - well deserved!

Cinemas, theatres…?

In the city centre there are the Rundkino cinema and the UFA Kristallpalast cinema. During midsummer the film nights take place on the banks of the Elbe. The Kino im Kasten cinema has student prices.

Theatre fans can enjoy a wide range of programmes, for example, of the Staatsschauspiel Dresden or the Comödie Dresden. Musical highlights are the Dixieland-Festival and the Dresden Music Festival.

How to relax and recover

If the meadow at the pond behind the faculty is no longer sufficient, we recommend a visit to the Großer Garten park or the Elbe meadows on the Königsufer with its beautiful view of the old town.

You can also use your free time more actively by taking a walk in the forests of the Dresdner Heide or a bicycle tour along the Elbe.

Student clubs

ost cities with big universities have clubs and bars specifically for students. Fortunately Dresden is no exception to this. You can choose between 13 different student clubs to spend your night partying or just relax with your friends at the bar. An overview can be found on the page of the Studentenwerk.

Every year in May the Dresden night hike takes place. There is live music, free drinks and shuttle buses between all the clubs.

Local transport - How do I get from A to B?

With your student ID card, you can use a large part of the local public transport in the VVO free of charge. It is also valid as a semester ticket for regional transport in Saxony. You can find more information on the StuRa website.

Many places in Dresden can also be easily reached by bike - your own one or one of the many nextbike/sz-bike rental bikes. You will find them at many crossroads all over Dresden and extra stations on campus. You can also use this offer free of charge in Dresden and Leipzig within the first half hour with your student card.

Please inform yourself on the linked pages about the exact regulations!

And another tip: in DVB’s timetable information system, you can quickly and easily enter all stops using their respective abbreviations.
